Poetry Friday: Found Poem

It's a spiral galaxy
(seen edge-on, so it looks skinny)
colliding and merging
with an elliptical galaxy.
That's what astronomers think it is, anyway.
All the stars in the image
are in our own galaxy;
they just got in the way.

----found poem, from an email sent to me by my daughter. She took this picture remotely, via an array of telescopes in Chile.

(She says thank you so much for everyone's help on Monday.)

Poetry Friday is hosted today by Cuentecitos.

  1. You inspired me to look up what a "found poem" is... finally! Love the concept, love the poem.

  8. Hey, how funny. I just put up the new link at "Sunday Scribblings" and it is "Out of the World." If you feel like putting up your link there you might get some random new traffic.

    Hope you are well. Cheers!

  9. Absolutely love all of this!

For me too, the concept of stars getting in the way of a whole new universe is quite amazing!

    Great post!

  12. Wow. I just looked at the picture for a while before I even scrolled down to the poem. The picture is a poem on its own. Lucky daughter to see that with her own eyeballs and take its picture. Lucky us that you shared!

  13. I stopped by from Sunday Scribblings and have to say that is not only a nice poem, but you have a very nice blog here, too. Have I visited before? If not, why not? I'll be back.

  14. Sister AE, I think we might have met through one of Tricia's Monday Poetry stretches. Perhaps the one about the flower in Tibet?

  18. It's amazing how poetry can be found anywhere! Little did your daughter know she was being a poet when she wrote these words. Beautiful picture and writing!

  19. What a beautiful picture and a treasure to boot! The found poem goes perfectly.

I really enjoyed all the "findings" of your site too...especially 39 reasons to write!

  20. I enjoyed it...the found poem; imagine midst all the galaxies, it floated by and got sucked in by a telescope and a camera. I'm one of the random new traffic set.

  21. I think I mentioned this Sunday, but I met a software developer this weekend whose wife is getting her Ph.D. in Astronomy and studies galaxies (she calls it "galaxy forensics," as she studies the ones thought to be fizzing out, I guess you could say).

I was so interested in astronomy as I child, but then I met algebra.

I like that found poem, and I learned something new today.

  22. This is so interesting..."the found a poem". These lines too are cool

  23. Donald Rumsfeld creates a found poem almost every time he opens his mouth. (If only we could limit him to that). His 'known unknowns' is a classic example.

The galaxy 'found poem' seems to be a new riff on the theme of Blakes 'world in a grain of sand'. The very small and the stupendously big somehow grasped simultaneously.

  24. Gosh, I'm late cruising over...I LOVE this found poem! Beautiful.

  25. Thanks, everyone. I texted my daughter at the last minute on Friday to ask if I could put her words out here, and I'm glad I did. I'm tempted to post found poems all throughout National Poetry Month. Just to keep my eyes and heart looking all day...
