Poetry Friday: Standing on Your Own Two Feet

The ekphrastic challenge for March was provided by Tanita, who supplied this deliciously mysterious photo.

What is that girl looking at? Where is she? How did she learn to balance on that bike?

Who knows?

But she went. And she looked.  And she will remember that day.

Standing on Your Own Two Feet

A bike is for
downhill
and corners
two wheels
two legs
Go.

A bike is for
uphill
and alone
two wheels
two legs
Go.

A bike is for
flat roads
and wind
two wheels
two legs
Go.

Go now! On
your own
two feet
two wheels
two legs
Go. Go. Go!

  1. I am so thrilled at how different all of our poems are this month -- how one element or another of the artwork spoke to us. For you, the bike! I love the refrain of go. Go, go, go. Like pedaling!

  2. This poem rolls forward perfectly. It's so fresh and full of... girlhood, if that's not a weird thing to say. This should be shared!

  6. I LIVED on my bike as a kid. Love the refrain and the memories and the urgency. Go! See the world. Be in the world. Go!

  7. So small, so simple, so powerful! Just like being on your own on your bike.

Do kids have this experience anymore?
