Lucinda. Do you know her? Have you heard her sing?
Eisha, at 7-Imps, featured the amazing poetry of her dad, Miller Williams, a few months ago, but I don't know if anyone's ever featured Lucinda---her achy, tough, sexy, lyrical self---on a Poetry Friday. I'll let her dad introduce her:
"My poetry and her songs--you could say they both have dirt under the fingernails. In my writing, I try to get down to the nuts and bolts of living, and there’s no question that Lucinda does that, too. Her music is not abstract. There’s real sweat in every song." ---article over at Poets.org.
Sittin in the kitchen a house in Macon
Loretta's singing on the radio
Smell of coffee eggs and bacon
Car wheels on a gravel road
Pull the curtains back and look outside
Somebody somehere I don't know
Come on now child we're gonna go for a ride
Car wheels on a gravel road
Car wheels on a gravel road
Car wheels on a gravel road
---Car Wheels on a Gravel Road, Lucinda Williams. Full lyrics here.
Pair this one with her I Just Wanted to See You So Bad, and you'll be on the road, car wheels making that gravel fly...
Full downloadable concert via NPR here.
Poetry Friday is hosted by Semicolon.

A friend introduced me to her music a couple of years ago, and I haven't listened to the 2 CDs of hers I have in a while. So guess what's going on my player today? Thanks for the nudge.
ReplyDeleteNobody does gutteral heartbreak like Lucinda. Just glancing at the liner notes is reminding me what I love about her songs.
I've never listened to too much Lucinda, although I know some of her stuff. Very nice choice, though!
ReplyDeleteHave seen her name everywhere, but never had the chance to really get into her music. Now I have to!
ReplyDeleteI just love her stuff, especially the CD this song comes from.
ReplyDeleteAnd Eisha introduced me to Lucinda's "Hot Blood." Have you heard that one, an older tune of hers? So funny. I think it's from "Sweet Old World."
I loooooooooooooooooove Lucinda. When I worked at the concert hall in England, I had to do all the marketing for her concert, but moved back to the States before the actual show. SO DISAPPOINTING!
ReplyDeleteI'm not familiar with Lucinda. Thanks for the introduction. I like her father's description too.
ReplyDelete"car wheels on a gravel road" has always been one of my all time favorite sounds. Fills my heart with excitement because it means adventure is coming.
ReplyDeleteGod, I love Lucinda Williams. Once, long ago, I called Miller (I was able to sleuth out his digits) to ask if I could send some songs I had written to her.
ReplyDeleteHow stalker is THAT?!
I am an old, old big fan of Lucinda and have seen her many a time. This is perfect for today. Thanks...
ReplyDeleteI love, love, love Lucinda. Great choice. I had no idea her dad was a poet.
