How do you DO it?

I love hearing about the creative process. How do you DO it? is one question I could listen to a writer or artist answer all day and all night.

But you rarely hear editors talk about process.

So run right over to Brooklyn Arden and hear my lovely editor, Cheryl Klein, explain exactly how and why she wrote and chose flap copy for my next book, Operation Yes.

I know it's my book. I know she and I talked about all this. But still, hearing her lay out the process of it...well, that's a great story in itself.

  1. I was so thrilled when I read this last night. I loved getting inside her head as she reasoned through the process. It was fascinating, and she absolutely hooked me with her final copy.

Must we really wait until September to read it? Congrats, again!

  2. I'm going to head over there, right now!

BTW, I loved your interview with MotherReader and Caroline Hickey. Very nice!

  3. That was fabulous fun, Sara! I liked all three iterations, but the final version has me on the edge of my chair, credit card at the ready. I'm so looking forward to reading OPERATION YES (great new title, by the way). I wish I didn't have to wait!

  4. How interesting. I would not know where to start with a task like that. I can't even write an annotation.

  8. Thanks for this. I always like reading more about the work of an editor.

Did I just forget that your book title was changed? Or miss something? Wasn't it another title before?

  9. Yes, it was recently changed. I think Cheryl might mention that in the blog post. I have to catch myself, because I'm so used to calling it by the old title, New Recruit. But when you see the cover, you'll see why Operation Yes works so well!

  10. When my publisher changed the title of my homeschooling book, I had trouble remembering the new one, and so people would ask and I'd be all like, "Um, yeah, um, I'm going to have to look that up." Mortifying. A friend said to me yesterday that she couldn't believe how much I manage to do, but I told her it's just because I ignore some things other people consider kind of essential.
