Okay, remember how I dinged Real Simple magazine for not promoting book blogs? I totally forgive them.
Because now they've started the "No-Obligation Book Club." It's billed as "No time frame, no deadlines, no obligations: just the pleasures of reading good books, as suggested — and led — by Real Simple editors. The goal is to get the benefits of a book club...without feeling overwhelmed by rigid schedules." Robin, have they been listening to you?
And check out one of the first four book choices: The Book Thief by Markus Zusak!
One more thing. If you haven't been reading Jama's month of bear posts at alphabet soup, why not? She's got a particularly nice one up today, "Teddies to the Rescue."

I was just about to blog about this! There is also a great editorial about reading for pleasure in the newest issue of Real Simple.
ReplyDeleteI love it!

This DOES sound good. One of the reasons I never join book clubs is the pressure! And I'm so glad to see a YA title on the list! Hope they continue to include them.
ReplyDeleteP.S.Thanks for the shout out :)! My resident bears love you!
That's pretty great. I heard Jim Trelease say once that the success of Oprah's book club lies in the no-obligation, no-test factor (he was trying to make a larger point, of course, about schools and reading).

Aw, I can't believe you remember me when I've been absent for so long! Glad to hear that Real Simple is taking this real simple approach. I agree about regular book clubs feeling so intimidating. Thanks for highlighting this--I never would have known!
ReplyDeleteAnd hi, Sara! Even though I've been in the cave, I still think of you and all my bloggy pals! Hope you're well!
